We recently caught up with U.S Sports Scholarships client and current Northeastern State University student-athlete Tom Singhgolden. Tom shared with us his experiences from his time in the States so far as well as his plans beyond graduation.

Can you tell us about the experience you have had on your scholarship in the States?

The opportunity to study out in the States on a soccer scholarship has been one of the best experiences of my life so far. The life of a student athlete is a tough one, but extremely rewarding. The chance to train and play everyday with excellent facilities, as well as being able to live out in America is something that most people don’t get to experience and something that I feel very fortunate to be able to experience for another two years.

What has been most memorable to you about your experience?

I’ve had a lot of great experiences since I’ve been out here, and I’ve met some people that I will know for the rest of my life, however probably the most memorable experience was in my Freshman year when we played against the then reigning National Champions at their ground. The game was televised live on ESPN 3, and there were cameras surrounding the pitch, making it feel very professional! We tied the game 0-0, and it was great to watch the game back and hear the commentators highlighting me before the game!

Can you tell us about your plans for the future beyond graduation?

My aim is to go pro, so I’ll continue to play USL 2 every summer out here, and then after graduation see which clubs or coaches I can get in contact with and go from there!

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a sports scholarship?

The decision to come out to the States was the biggest and most difficult decision I’d ever had to make, but it was the most rewarding. I’ve loved every minute of my experience, but that doesn’t mean it’s all been easy. It’s tough to leave all your family and friends behind and start a new life out in America, but it’s something that you’ll be grateful you did. Being a student-athlete is academically and athletically challenging, but you’re constantly doing things you love. You become more independent and resilient to change, setting you up for anything you decide to do after graduation. You have the opportunity to visit places and do things you’d not be able to do by staying at home. Being able to study what you want, while playing the sport you love, all the while being on a scholarship is something that very few get to experience, and something that should be grabbed with by both hands if you get the chance.
