4. ELIGIBILITY CENTER CLEARANCE

Another extremely important task for most prospective student-athletes is registering with relevant eligibility centers and submitting all necessary documentation in order to get cleared to play at collegiate level. The process of having your profile reviewed and cleared can take months and needs to be completed before four year schools can process your application and award you with your I-20 form, which is necessary for obtaining a student-visa. Players who fail to meet the eligibility center criteria can be deducted seasons in which they can compete.

5. SCHOLARSHIP NEGOTIATIONS

Once your profile has been circulated to relevant US college coaches, we will work with you and on your behalf to help negotiate the best possible financial package from the schools that are of interest to you. Negotiations is naturally a crucial stage in the process and discussions can go on for months but both parties obviously need to make sure that they are a good fit for each other. For schools they are potentially investing up to $250,000 in a student-athlete during their collegiate career so recruitment is taken very seriously.

6. COMMIT TO A SCHOOL

Having spoken with coaches and players from all interested schools, you can then decide which one you would like to play for during your collegiate career. Once notified the school will send over a national letter of intent as way of committing you to play for the school; which will also detail the scholarship amounts awarded to you.

7. ADMISSIONS CLEARANCE

Having committed to a school the student-athlete then needs to get cleared by their admissions department in order to be able to study there, the same as you would if going to a university in the UK. Again the student-athletes designated U.S Sports Scholarships consultant would provide all required support to guide them through this process.

8. VISA APPROVED

One of the last but arguably most important stage in the process is getting your student visa approved by the U.S Embassy, which can only take place once you have been cleared by your chosen university’s admissions department.

The competition for a sports scholarship is extremely fierce so we strongly recommend starting the process as soon as possible. Ideally, the process of applying for undergraduate study in America will begin 1-1½ years before enrolment at a U.S university. Below is an example of some of the key steps in the process timeline that a prospective student-athlete will need to complete prior to enrolling at a university in America:

2-3 YEARS BEFORE ENROLMENT

Contact U.S Sports Scholarships to arrange an initial consultation and to learn more your eligibility for a place at an American university. Based on suitable universities we will decide whether you need to take an entrance exam (such as the SAT or ACT).

1-2 YEAR BEFORE ENROLMENT:

If you have not already, register and sit an admissions test before then working on your admissions applications and scholarship search.

LEAD UP TO ENROLMENT:

Submit your applications with regular admissions deadlines tending to be in December/January. You will then receive admissions decisions and can then notify the universities of your decision and apply for your visa. Enrolment at your university will typically begin in August.
