We recently caught up with U.S Sports Scholarships client and current Oakland University student-athlete Hollie Clement. Hollie shared with us her experiences from her time in the States so far as well as her plans beyond graduation.

Can you tell us about the experience you have had on your scholarship in the States?

After two years, I can happily say that making the decision to take this opportunity has been the best thing I ever did. I have been given the chance to play the sport I love and have always loved, alongside receiving a top level education. Although the move is hard and I do miss home every single day, I couldn’t be more grateful for the life I am living. I have met some of the best people who I will call friends for life, played some of the best and most intense football of my career so far, travelled to numerous different states, been given the opportunity to study something I am truly interested in and met the man I will hopefully call my husband one day. It isn’t easy but I suppose nothing that’s truly worth it ever is.

What has been most memorable to you about your experience?

There have been so many just within my first two years! The first day of pre season will always be very memorable to me, it was the moment where I was really able to look around and say “I did it, I achieved my dream”. However, attending the Conference Tournament this year, in my sophomore season was an unbelievable experience. We travelled to Chicago, then onto Northern Kentucky and then to Milwaukee, every game was a knockout opportunity for both teams. I scored the goal in our first knockout game to get us to the tournament which was a great moment for me. We travelled for 9 days straight, going from hotel to hotel and state to state. It’s a lot of time on the road but, when you’re with your best friends, fighting for each other in every game, it’s so worth it!

Can you tell us about your plans for the future beyond graduation?

Seeing as I still have two years left, this is a tough one to answer because I’m not really sure! I will 100% continue in the game, whether it be playing or coaching! I still have a big decision to make on whether I will stay in the US or come home to the UK, but that is dependant on many other things! I guess I will see where life takes me, I still have two years to go so I’m just focusing on getting good grades, playing football and having fun!

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a sports scholarship?

I would say to trust yourself, and believe in your abilities. Although it is a tough decision and a long and difficult process which may seem very scary, it is so worth it! As long as you work hard and believe in yourself you can do anything! There will be times where you miss home but this opportunity gives you the chance to create a new home with a new family, and trust me it’s brilliant! If you want to go but you feel as though something is holding you back such as nerves or fear: don’t let it! Be confident in yourself and believe that you can do it, whatever or wherever it is! You will regret it if you don’t give it a try! So do it and don’t look back, that way you have no regrets later on!
